7 Things you should know about Korea, if you are interested in Korea!

To be quite frank, you can’t find posts written in English in Smallry.com these days anymore. However, Smallfry.com has been started as English blog for the first time. Since the main purpose of building this blog was to communicate with some friends of mine who came from different countries. With some reasons, (especially one of the reasons was my poor English skills, maybe!) I was not able to maintain this blog as English version.

But, from today, having the idea that I have had when I ran this blog for the first time, I would like to start writing some posts in English again. Even though, my English skill is not good enough though. But with the little hope that my English would be better while writing some documents in English like this!

"7 Things you should know about Korea, if you are interested in Korea!"

The first subject I am rewriting in English is about Korea, that we should know, if you are interested in this country. I might say that this would be basic knowledge of Korea. Even though, this information could let you down, please don't blame me! Because there would be some people who might need this kind of simple information!

Kyeonghoi Roo, One part of Kyungbok Palace.

"The Capital of Korea, Seoul"

Normally, we bind the capital and the name of the country easily, like it or not, people are just doing that, and even in school we have been taught like that. Thus, it might be important that memorizing the Capital city of Korea, Seoul.

Seoul has been a capital city of Chosun Dynasty since 1394, the foundation year of Chosun Dynasty. So almost everything has been converged here for a long time, politics, education, administraion, culture etc.

This place has been divided into two part largely, the North and the South, by Han river. In the North Part, you can find so many traditional Korean style buildings and cultural properties, such as Kyeongbok palace and Bukchon Korean traditional style village. However, The South has been expended relatively recently, so it's hard to find that kind of traditional hot place easily, instead you could find the one of the most fastest and crowded hot places like Gangnam in Gangnam style by PSY.

"TIME ZONE : PACIFIC STANDARD TIME, +9 HOURS"

In Korea, normally you will have 9 hours time difference from London. But in summer season, the time difference could be shortened as 8 hours. Because Korea doesn not use "SUMMER TIME SYSTEM". And there is no time difference from Japan. Even though, Seoul and Tokyo's Longitutudes are a little bit different, (about 30 minutes). However, the time is so slight, thus the government decided not to use different time zone from them.

"National Anthem : KOREAN NATIONAL ANTHEM"

These days, it is a little bit hard to hear the Korean national anthem easily in public places. However, almost of the Koreans are patriotic, so... almost of them memorize the National Anthem perfectly! In a Soccer A-Match, Olympic matches, or other matches between nations, you will hear national Anthem, but if you don't know about that, I recommend that you will listen to that by clicking the play button!

"National Flower : Rose of Sharon"

Even though, in the United States, there is no national flower, (they only have states flower), we have our own national flower which represent our coutry, "Rose of Sharon". The scientific name of this flower is Hibiscus syriacus(Althaea frutex). They are normally blossoming between July to October. And about 15 of August, in front of the Kwanghwa Gate (Front gate of Kyeongbok Palace), we could see that there is a festival of Rose of Sharon.

"National Flag : TAEGEUKGI"

Korean national flag, seems to be that it is one of the most complex flag to draw. Actually, as for Smallfry.com, who is native Korean, somtimes it makes me a little bit compused, since the pattern of the flag is so complex. However, there are so many meanings in the pattern complicated enough. I found the image in the internet, I guess that the image explains about the Korean national flag easily!

Meaning of TAEGEUKGI

"The only divided country in the world"

To be quite frank, this is not an interesting fact. But we have to admit it, Korea is the only country which is divided in two countries because of ideological conflict. Maybe, whole over the world, you could easily hear from the North for threatening nearby country with their amazing nuclear weapon. Thus, even though I never have been abroad yet, I have heard that if I said that "I am Korean", then the listener react back 'North?" However, I am not a North Korean, who is just live in democratic country.

Well, know it or not, Korea is only one country which is divided into two countries, even the nation is the same race. And, almost of the every Korean want to get united one day, however the outcome is far from certain.

From now on, in this post, I summerized the things that we should know about Korea, if you are interested in Korea. Although, I titiled as "7 Things you should know about...", but actually, I have written about 6 Things, you might say that "Where is the last one thing?" I leave the last one thing as yours! I intended that the last one thing could be added as reply or messaging me via email or guestbook!
