[학술] 논문 작성에 도움되는 '신호등 표현(TRANSITION SIGNALS)'

바로 이전 포스팅에서 APA 기본양식에 관해서 알아보았고, 동시에 영어 논문 작성시, 꼭 피해야 할 기본적인 것들에 대해서 한번 알아보았다. 이번에는 그러한 "영어 논문 작성시 피해야할 것"들에 도움이 되는 그러한 내용에 관한 포스팅이라고 하면 될 듯 하다. 바로 "AND, SO, BUT" 등과 같은 표현들을 피하게 해주는 조금 더 고급지고 세련된 표현들을 여기에서 한번 정리를 해볼 것이니 말이다. 우리는 흔히 이러한 표현들을 "TRANSITIONAL SIGNALS"라고 부르는데, 이러한 표현들이 등장하면 독자들은 으레 뒤에는 이것과 비슷한 내용이 나오겠거니... 혹은 전혀 다른 내용이 나오겠거니 하는 생각을 미리 할 수 있기때문이다.

"TRANSITION SIGNALS, 신호등 표현들을 정리해보도록 하자."

이러한 표현들은 각자 다른 내용을 가지고 있는 모습인데, 각 부분별로 하나씩 살펴보도록 하자.

위에서 참고로 알아두어야 할 것은 바로, BESIDES라는 표현이다. 이 표현 뒤에는 문장이 올 수도, 명사가 올 수도 있으니, 다용도로 유용하게 사용할 수 있는 표현이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

"OPPOSITE IDEA TRANSITION SIGNALS" ☞ 반대되는 내용이 따라올 경우

여기에서 주의해야 할 부분은 바로 DESPITE가 아닐까 싶다. 뒤에 문장이 올 것처럼 생겼지만 실상은 그렇지 않고 명사가 온다는 것을 기억해두도록 하자.

"RESULT" ☞ 결과가 따라오는 경우

SENTENCE CONNECTORS : ACCORDINGLY, AS A RESULT, AS A CONSEQUENCE...

CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS : THEREFORE, CONSEQUENTLY, HENCE, THUS...

여기까지, 일명 신호등 표현이라고 하는 TRNASITION SIGNALS를 한번 정리해보았다. 이제부터는, 이 표현들을 활용해서 적용해보는 연습을 한번 가벼보도록 하자. 아래의 자료는 필자가 수업을 들었던 수업시간에 활용했던 보조자료인데, 기존에 있는 표현들을 조금 더 나은 표현으로 바꾸어 보는 연습을 해보도록 하자.
